Remittances and tourism both grow by more than 11% in the first nine months

By the Morocco News Today desk · 2 November 2026

Moroccans abroad sent home over 103 billion dirhams by the end of September, while visitors spent more than 115 billion — two pillars of the country's foreign currency income.

Key facts
  • Diaspora transfers: MAD 103.06 billion (≈ $10.5 billion), +11.3%
  • Travel receipts: MAD 115.26 billion (≈ $11.7 billion), +12.1%
  • Tourist arrivals: about 15.7 million, +5%

Money sent home by Moroccans living abroad reached MAD 103.06 billion (about $10.5 billion) between January and September 2026, according to provisional data from the Office des Changes, the foreign exchange office. That is 11.3% more than the MAD 92.63 billion recorded over the same period last year, an increase of about MAD 10.4 billion.

Remittances are one of the most stable sources of foreign currency for Morocco. The IMF estimates they were worth around 7.2% of GDP in 2025. Roughly two-thirds come from Europe, with Gulf countries contributing less than a fifth.

Tourism keeps pace

The same bulletin shows travel receipts — what foreign visitors spend in Morocco — rising 12.1% to about MAD 115.26 billion. Moroccans' own spending on travel abroad grew 8% to MAD 26.96 billion, leaving a travel surplus of about MAD 88.3 billion, up 13.4%.

About 15.7 million tourists arrived over the nine months, 5% more than a year earlier, according to figures reported by Le360.

Why it matters

Together, remittances and tourism bring in more than MAD 218 billion in nine months. They help finance imports of energy and food and support the dirham, which matters even more in a year when unemployment has risen and some food prices are under pressure.
